What We're Reading Today

Today we're reading the disturbing news that pay in private sector jobs is shrinking to historic lows, the long term job losses that America faces, and an interesting op/ed with commonsense solutions to tackle Washington's fiscal irresponsibility.

Private Pay Shrinks to Historic Lows - Dennis Cauchon, USA Today

"Paychecks from private business shrank to their smallest share of personal income in U.S. history during the first quarter of this year, a USA TODAY analysis of government data finds. At the same time, government-provided benefits — from Social Security, unemployment insurance, food stamps and other programs — rose to a record high during the first three months of 2010. Those records reflect a long-term trend accelerated by the recession and the federal stimulus program to counteract the downturn. The result is a major shift in the source of personal income from private wages to government programs."

Monumental Job Losses in America - Clive Crook, Financial Times

"Unemployment in the US is high not just by its own past standards but by international standards, too, which is doubly strange. Figures also show a startling rise in long-term unemployment, to levels previously associated with Europe’s broken labour markets."

Washington's $1 Trillion Opportunity - Paul Light, Wall Street Journal

"If the [President's Fiscal] commission wants a more positive note the next time it meets, it should take a look at the $1 trillion opportunity that resides in comprehensive bureaucratic reform. Not only is the rate of return high, the reforms are well within reach and long overdue.

The savings will not be found in hiring freezes and pay cuts—which inevitably lead to backdoor pay increases through promotions and title creep—but in streamlining the government's antiquated systems, duplicative programs, and needlessly dense organization chart."

Now more than ever we are acutely aware of the US Senate as the focus of all of our National problems. I pray to our God that all minds are opened to the cause of this poison. The US Senate was established as a protective arm for the States against our National government. Our states lost that right to appoint US Senators and control the US Senate and we lost protection and eventually our liberties when the 17th amendment was passed in 1913. The US Senators were turned loose to run campaigns, collect donations and expose themselves to the corruption of special interest groups. Repeal the 17th amendment, return to the States their protective arm. It is easier than you think to do. The State legislatures can repeal it using power from within their reach (Article V of the US Constitution provides them the power to do it alone without US Congressional help)

Good to know that you haven't broken the mold and continue to lie and distort facts as the rest of the Republican Party does.  I just watched your Meet the Press segment, and you claim the Obama Administration approved the Deepwater Horizon.  Of course, that is misleading at best.  The Deepwater Horizon arrived in the Gulf in September 2001.  The Obama administration merely reviewed the Deepwater....and even that was done with inherited corrupt officials from the Bush administration.

Now you want to continue your lies by trying to tie the shrinking real wages of Americans to the Obama administration even though the problem has been noted at least back to George W (and some say back to good ol' Ronnie Reagan).

Thanks for not disappointing us and using honest tactics, sound economics and facts.
